If you have any other questions you can contact us here.
Modern roller derby is an international, all-female, full contact, amateur sport. It is played by two teams of fourteen. Five members of each team are on the track at any given point. Game play consists of a series of short matchups ("jams") in which both teams skate in the same direction around an oval designate with a player (the "jammer") scoring points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer.
Most leagues require skaters to be at least 18 years old and some require that skaters be over 21. Some leagues are affiliated with junior roller derby leagues, which allow girls as young as 6 to get involved. There are also some recreational leagues popping up with different policies as well. To join The Norfolk Brawds you must be at least 18 years old.
"Fresh Meat" is the affectionate term used in roller derby for new skaters. It is a similar phrase to "New blood". It stems from the American term Freshman for the new starters at High School or College. As Fresh Meat you are right at the start of your roller derby experience.
Apart from a good dose of enthusiasm, you will need a few pieces of equipment:
This can seem like quite a lot to buy, although often girls who have been skating awhile and have upgraded their equipment will have old equipment to pass on to new skaters. However, as you get better and start bouting you will want to upgrade your equipment. Skate and equipment prices can vary a lot, with a pair of derby skates costing as little as £90 or as much as £500, but in the end, as with most things, you get what you pay for.
Any woman over the age of 18 who wishes to try a fun new sport that is challenging and empowering women the world over.
We don't have a male derby team yet but we are always on the look out for men to join our team of referees and non-skating officials (NSOs) to keep our girls in check.
